The River Project

Eco School
Pupils at Doveridge Primary School a coveted Eco-Schools Green Flag.

Pupils at Doveridge Primary School have earned an international accreditation this academic year, recognising their amazing work in making their school environmentally friendly and raising eco-awareness in fellow pupils.

Eco-Schools is an international education programme that prompts young people to explore sustainability and climate change and take action.

Pupils at Doveridge Primary School collaborated with Mrs Gadsby to conduct an environmental review, assessing how eco-friendly their school is. They reviewed everything from the school’s recycling practices, to energy usage, to how environmental themes are covered in classrooms. Building on their findings, the pupils and Mrs Gadsby planned a year of activities that would up their green-credentials.

The group connected their work to 3 Eco-Schools topics, these were:

Protecting and preserving water based eco systems.

Increasing Biodiversity in our school grounds and local community.

Understanding the importance of water.

Activities included:

Class 4 and Eco-Council members completed a River Project about the River Dove. We were very grateful for the grant from ‘Transforming the Trent Valley’ Community Grants Scheme, which made it all possible.

The day’s purpose was to help the children of Doveridge Primary School and the wider family community, to learn about our natural, built and cultural heritage as well as learning about the River Dove and the importance of the river’s habitat, which is part of our Science, Geography and History curriculums.

Class 2 took part in an award called ‘Wild Challenge’ which is associated with the RSPB. We completed many interesting challenges, for example, pond dipping, creating homes for wildlife and investigating habitats. We achieved both Bronze and Silver Awards.

As a whole school we participated in web based learning in conjunction with Severn Trent. Which included learning about the importance of water around the world and ways to save water at home.

Mrs Gadsby said: ‘Congratulations to everyone for the great work you have managed to do. You should all be very proud of your amazing work and the great application you have submitted, I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised with an Eco-Schools Green Flag!’

Eco-Schools England Manager, Adam Flint, said: “Earning an Eco-Schools Green Flag Award takes passion, commitment and a desire to make a difference. Pupils should be proud of their great work. They’re an inspiration and it makes us feel heartened and positive about the future of our planet.”
