Class 1: British Values

How are the British Values taught or promoted in Class1?

Our Nursery and Reception children celebrate British Values, in age-appropriate ways that help them understand fairness and making choices. Here are some examples of how we demonstrate Democracy:

  1. Voting: Everyday in Class 1 the children vote for the book that they would like to listen to before lunchtime. The children independently use our voting station during ‘play to learn’ time and we calculate the winner at the end of each morning. This help in teaching the children about taking turns and making group choices.
  2. Sharing Ideas: Circle time is a fantastic time for children to express their opinions, allowing them to experience their voice being heard and valued.
  3. Fair Play: Through games and group activities, children learn about fairness, rules, and respecting others' opinions.
  4. Classroom Jobs: We like to give our children classroom roles as we believe that this gives them responsibility and helps them understand the importance of contributing to the group.

These activities introduce the principles of democracy in a fun and practical way.

Rule of Law –

Our children in Class 1 celebrate Rule of Law in many ways including;-

  1. Classroom Rules: In Class 1 we work very hard to follow our three school rules of being Ready, showing Respect and being Safe. Our teachers and children refer to these rules often and a wide variety of praise is given when these rules are followed. The children regularly receive verbal praise, stickers, super sticks and steps up our class ladder. Unfortunately, if our school rules are broken, then a consequence is given (time out and steps down our ladder). If we get to the top of the ladder to our pot of gold by the end of the half term, we receive our end of half term treat.
  2. Role-Play: In Class 1, we have a dressing up area with a variety of different costumes for the children to wear. Using role-play scenarios, allows children to learn about fairness and equality in a safe way.
  3. Storytelling: During our Well –Being Wednesday lessons or if needed, we might read stories with moral lessons about following rules and fairness as this can help children grasp why laws exist and how they protect everyone.
  4. Turn-Taking Games: In our class we like to play games together that involve waiting for turns and following rules teach respect and fairness.

.

Individual Liberty - During our reflective points of the day, whether it be during our ‘Circle Gallery’ in art, our carpet time during ‘Wellbeing Wednesday’ or even learning discussions during maths, the children are regularly given the opportunity to voice their opinions, ideas and discuss different methods they have chosen to use.

Our children are given long periods of time throughout the day away from teacher led/guided tasks, where they can freely make choices about where and what they would like to play with and how they would like to develop their own learning. The children’s interests also inform our day to day planning and half termly topic themes.

Mutual respect

One of our school rules is Respect.  We celebrate and teach this through simple, everyday activities. Some ways include:

  1. Sharing and Taking Turns: Throughout the day all children both in Nursery and Reception take part in guided activities and continuous provision. The children learn to wait their turn and share toys which fosters respect for others' needs.
  2. Listening to Others: We encourage the children to listen when their friends or adults are speaking, which helps to promote respect for different opinions and ideas.
  3. Celebrating Diversity: In Class 1 we are always very curious and really enjoy learning about people with different faiths and beliefs to our own. us. We introduce children to different cultures, traditions, and festivals which teaches them to respect and value differences in backgrounds. Throughout the year we celebrate Chinese New Year, Diwali, Holi, Shrove Tuesday, Remembrance Day, and other key events or religious festivals, through themed days across the year. Alongside this, we also regularly learn about a different faith during our R.E sessions. We learn about how people from different faiths have many similarities as well as differences to us.
  4. Positive Role Models: The teachers at Doveridge Primary model respectful behaviour, showing children how to treat others kindly and fairly. In our classroom we have a ‘Tree of Kindness’ where a person’s name is added to a leaf when an act of kindness for another has been witnessed.
  5. Teamwork Activities: Playing games in our classroom and during our Forest School sessions help our children to understand the importance of working together with respect for everyone's contributions. Our children work with the Teachers to help plan their future learning. This allows the children to take ownership of their Curriculum and helps us to follows our children’s interests.

We regularly use discussion, games and stories to help us understand about how we are similar and different to our friends. We particularly love reading Todd Parr’s books!
